Andy Le
Graduate Structural Engineer
A recent civil and infrastructure engineer graduate that is passionate about the engineering industry and positively impacting people’s lives through effective civil solutions. I aim to fulfill my ambition of becoming a professional civil engineer by gaining valuable experience, whilst developing and improving my current knowledge and skillset.
Engineers Without Borders Project – Introduction to Professional Engineering Practice
- With the partnership of the Cambodian Rural Development Team (CRDT), our team was provided the opportunity to improve basic quality of life for a small village in the Kratie Province, Cambodia.
- As a group of six, we had to create a solution that considered the economic, environmental, and social factors that could potentially impact the villagers.
- Ultimately, the team collaborated to create a water filtering tool that utilised cheap materials and was easily accessible to the local population.
Hydraulic Analysis and Bulk Water Pipeline Design – Water Engineering
- This assignment required groups of four to design a pipeline connecting the Goulburn River to Sugarloaf Reservoir in north-east Melbourne. This infrastructure sought to secure Victoria’s water supplies in the face of droughts because of climate change
- The pipeline will be able to transfer up to 75 GL of water annually to Melbourne, and required us to calculated head losses, flow rate, pump power and velocity between numerous points on the pipeline. This task gave me a broader insight on the water infrastructure and allowed me to display my critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Road Design Group Project – Transport Engineering 1
- As a group of 5 we proposed and drafted a two-way road on a topographical map located in Whittlesea. These designs took into consideration land use, topography, traffic volume, flora and fauna.
- Initially three different routes were drawn and analysed on the topographical map. One was ultimately chosen, and calculations were then made on horizontal and vertical designs of the road.
- AutoCAD drawings were drawn for 3 cross-sections of the road.
House Design – Sustainable Infrastructure Design
- This individual project was conducted in 2 stages. During stage 1 AutoCAD framing layouts of the front, side and top view of the double storey house was required.
- The house design balanced multiple factors of sustainability desired in Australia such as passive designs for wind, temperature, and light. Additionally, efficiency of water and energy consumption were considered.
- Stage 2 included professional drawings of the structure and calculations for lintels, slabs, columns, joists, beams, and roof trusses that followed AS1170.0, AS1170.1, AS1720.1 and AS2870.
Car Park Redevelopment Project – Steel Structures 2
- Working as a pair, our task was to design the redevelopment of RMIT building 91 into a 4-storey carpark which accommodates a new sports facility.
- Our challenge was to create a design that maximised possible parking spaces, and took into consideration of internal traffic flow, vehicle volume, and overall accessibility.
- Calculations were made for structural parts of the building, these included critical columns, beams, slabs and the roof structure. These designs exercised skills within AutoCAD and touched on AS2327, AS4100, AS1170.1 and AS2890.
Structural Health Monitoring of a Steel Tram Bridge – Engineering Capstone Project
- As a group of 6 our capstone project consisted of using both a structural assessment and a higher tier structural health monitoring method to validate and perform a more accurate assessment of the condition of structures.
- Working on the infamous Montague Street Bridge – known to being collided by trucks. Our team ultimately completed a model on SPACEGASS to determine the load effects and load factors and validated these against the factors calculated with data collected from the SHM methodology.
- Our report showcased the overall benefits of using new wireless sensory devices to conduct higher tier SHM assessments that may be applied to multiple other steel structures.
- Managing and scheduling several guests at a time.
- Maintained a happy to help attitude and ensured guest satisfaction.
- Proper hygiene and professionalism were maintained consistently online and in person.
- Managed and fulfilled customers requests in an efficient and timely manner.
- Operated on cash registers taking customers’ orders and payments.
- Consistently performed above expected standard.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills developed through comprehensive essay writing, exposure to variety of speaking situations, and oral presentations throughout the course of secondary and tertiary education.
- Highly motivated and disciplined that thrives in a fast pace working environment.
- Exceptional time management and organisation skills that allowed me to thrive in both professional and academic environments.
- Experienced with Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Office).
- Proficient in AutoCAD through constant utilisation and application throughout university.
- Ability to comfortable use programs such as SPACEgass, Revit and RORBwin.
